Stock market crash: I’d buy these top stocks in an ISA if UK share prices crash again

first_imgSimply click below to discover how you can take advantage of this. See all posts by Royston Wild I’m sure you’ll agree that’s quite the statement from Motley Fool Co-Founder Tom Gardner. But since our US analyst team first recommended shares in this unique tech stock back in 2016, the value has soared. What’s more, we firmly believe there’s still plenty of upside in its future. In fact, even throughout the current coronavirus crisis, its performance has been beating Wall St expectations. And right now, we’re giving you a chance to discover exactly what has got our analysts all fired up about this niche industry phenomenon, in our FREE special report, A Top US Share From The Motley Fool. It doesn’t matter what your attitude to risk is. If another stock market crash happens I reckon you should take the opportunity to get rich by buying cheap UK share prices. The chances of another market crash have certainly picked up in recent days as Covid-19 infection rates have spiked again. And a subsequent reinstatement of quarantine measures in some places has raised fears of a very slow economic recovery.5G is here – and shares of this ‘sleeping giant’ could be a great way for you to potentially profit!According to one leading industry firm, the 5G boom could create a global industry worth US$12.3 TRILLION out of thin air…And if you click here we’ll show you something that could be key to unlocking 5G’s full potential…Buying low UK share pricesThis doesn’t mean that you and I should stop buying UK shares, however. Stock market crashes are dramatic and quite uncomfortable to watch. No one likes watching the value of their investments go down the toilet. But remember that share market corrections are nothing new, and history shows us that investors who don’t panic and hold onto their shares should still expect to make excellent returns.Remember that you only realise an actual loss when you sell your stocks at a lower price than you bought them for. If you’ve bought quality stocks in a balanced portfolio you’re likely to see those UK share prices rebound in value over time.Indeed, we at The Motley Fool believe that a fresh collapse in UK share prices could boost all our chances of getting rich over the long run. Buying top-quality UK shares at rock-bottom prices allows us to maximise our returns as improving economic conditions drive their prices higher again.Protect yourself from another stock market crashI can sympathise with investors who remain reluctant to buy UK share prices that indicate blockbuster value, though. The worst economic crash for generations (and, in the case of the UK, for 300 years) isn’t something to take likely. However, there are a multitude of brilliant stocks that should hold up strongly in the event of another stock market crash.Precious metal stocks are some of these exceptional lifeboats. While the broader stock market continues to struggle, silver producer Hochschild Mining, for instance, came close to hitting new three-year highs on Friday. Highland Gold Mining came within a whisker of printing new record peaks around 300p. And platinum group metals (PGM) giant Tharisa has just hit its most expensive level since the 2020 stock market crash began in late February. There’s plenty of scope for these UK share prices to keep booming as the economic outlook darkens, too. Indeed, the boffins at ING expect gold prices to hit a new record of $2,100 by the year’s end. The outlook for precious metals beyond the next year or so looks quite robust as well, as ultra-loose central bank policy is here to stay.So don’t sit on the fence and stop buying stocks on fear of another market crash. I reckon buying these UK shares is a great way to try to get rich without losing any sleep. 3 FTSE 100 stocks that I think could benefit if Biden stimulus is passed

first_img See all posts by Jay Yao Simply click below to discover how you can take advantage of this. The high-calibre small-cap stock flying under the City’s radar Joe Biden is now the 46th President of the United States, and the leader-in-chief in fighting against the Covid-19 pandemic. Biden being President could affect many FTSE 100 stocks. In addition to trying to get more shots from Pfizer vials, Biden has an ambitious $1.9 trillion stimulus package that he wants Congress to pass (which won’t be easy). Among the stimulus plan’s proposals is a $1,400 check to many individuals, as well as fiscal help for local and state governments. 5G is here – and shares of this ‘sleeping giant’ could be a great way for you to potentially profit!According to one leading industry firm, the 5G boom could create a global industry worth US$12.3 TRILLION out of thin air…And if you click here we’ll show you something that could be key to unlocking 5G’s full potential…If Biden succeeds in getting Congress to go along with the plan, here are three FTSE 100 stocks that I think could benefit. FTSE 100 stock HSBCIf Biden’s stimulus passes, the US economy could potentially reach full employment faster. If the US economy reaches full employment faster, US interest rates could also potentially normalise faster. Given that Hong Kong has a free market economy and the region pegs its currency to the US dollar, Hong Kong interest rates often follow the US’s lead. A faster normalisation of US interest rates could mean a faster normalisation of Hong Kong interest rates. Seeing as how FTSE 100 stock HSBC (LSE:HSBA) derives a lot of profits from Hong Kong, I think the bank could benefit if the Biden stimulus is passed. Banks often find it easier to make more profits in a higher interest rate environment rather than a low interest rate environment. Because I think the stock could go higher this year due to economic normalization and the potential stimulus, I’d buy shares in HSBC. Like other financial banks, however, I reckon HSBC has downside if its results don’t meet expectations or if sentiment worsens. Standard CharteredFTSE 100 stock Standard Chartered (LSE: STAN) could also potentially benefit if interest rates rise in Hong Kong. Like HSBC, Standard Chartered makes a considerable amount of profits from the city as well.If Standard Chartered made more profits, the bank could potentially return more capital to shareholders. Given Standard Chartered’s low price to book value of 0.44, I reckon a meaningful capital return policy would help the stock. Because it has a lot of potential given its low valuation and the recovering emerging market economies, I’d buy Standard Chartered shares. If the sentiment worsens or management doesn’t execute as well as expected on the other hand, it’s my view the stock has downside. Pershing Square HoldingsPershing Square Holdings (LSE:PSH) is a recently minted FTSE 100 stock that entered into the index in December of last year.  It’s a trust that follows investor Bill Ackman’s hedge fund holdings. I think Pershing Square Holdings could potentially benefit if the Biden stimulus is passed. With a $1,400 stimulus check, for example, many people could buy more Chipotle, a company whose stock Ackman’s fund owns. Indeed, many of Ackman’s holdings are consumer companies or economically sensitive stocks that could benefit if the US economy does better. Ackman has done really well of late. If his hedge fund’s substantial outperformance continues, Pershing Square Holdings could potentially outperform too. With that said, if Ackman’s hedge fund underperforms, the trust could underperform as well. Due to the fees, I’d just follow Pershing Square Holdings but it could certainly be intriguing given the right situation. Soybean Drying, Storage Could Be Challenging

first_img SHARE Soybean Drying, Storage Could Be Challenging By Hoosier Ag Today – Oct 25, 2019 SHARE Facebook Twitter Facebook Twitter Previous articleFall Weed Control Reminders on Late, Prevent Plant AcresNext articleHarvest Forecast: Expect 1″ to 3″ of Rain From Weekend System Hoosier Ag Today Home News Feed Soybean Drying, Storage Could Be Challenging North Dakota State University ExtensionA challenging soybean harvest this fall is raising many storage and drying questions, according to Ken Hellevang, an agricultural engineer with North Dakota State University Extension.According to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, as of Sunday only 28% of Nebraska’s soybeans had been harvested, compared with 38% last year and the five-year average of 47%. Approximately 91% had dropped their leaves, compared with 97% for last year and the five-year average. Other soybean production states in the Midwest reported similar delays. This week’s freezing temperatures likely will impede maturity and drying across much of the region, Hellevang says. “Soybeans that freeze before maturity may have a green color and will be smaller than mature beans after drying.“Also, field drying may be slower,” he notes. “Beans may change color during dry-down and through time in storage. Green-colored beans will be discounted due to the required additional processing of the oil.”Shatter losses have been shown to increase significantly when mature beans undergo multiple wetting and drying cycles. Moisture content can increase by several points with an overnight dew or rain event, and it can decrease by several points during a day with low humidity and windy conditions. Soybean moisture variation may lead to storage losses. Operating an aeration fan will help move moisture from wet beans to drier beans, Hellevang says. Air going past wet beans picks up moisture, and that moisture will transfer to drier beans as the air goes past them.Moisture movement will be minimal without aeration airflow. Hellevang suggests initially running the fan longer than is required to cool the beans to even out the moisture content. The moisture will not be all the same, but it should become more uniform. Soybeans at 11% moisture have similar storage characteristics as wheat or corn at about 13.5% moisture, so 16% moisture soybeans might be expected to store the same way as about 18.5% moisture corn or wheat. Beans at 18% moisture would be similar to about 20.5% moisture corn.Drying SoybeansThe amount of natural-air drying in bins that will occur in northern states in late October and early November is limited. The equilibrium moisture content of soybeans for air at 40 degrees and 70% relative humidity is about 13.5%, so drying soybeans with moisture contents above 13.5% would be expected with this air condition. However, the drying rate will be slow at typical in-bin drying airflow rates. An airflow rate of 1 cubic foot per minute per bushel (cfm/bu) is expected to dry 18% moisture soybeans in about 70 days. With an airflow rate of 1.5 cfm/bu, the drying time is reduced to about 47 days. The drying time for 16% moisture soybeans is slightly less — about 60 days at an airflow rate of 1 cfm/bu. Adding supplemental heat to raise the air temperature by 5 degrees will permit drying 16% soybeans to about 11% moisture in about 55 days. Increasing the airflow rate proportionally reduces the drying time but greatly increases the needed fan horsepower. For a soybean depth of 22 feet, every 1,000 bushels of soybeans will require about 1 horsepower of fan to achieve an airflow rate of 1 cfm/bu. Achieving an airflow rate of 1.25 cfm/bu will require about 1.6 horsepower per 1,000 bushels, and an airflow rate of 1.5 cfm/bu will need about 2.5 horsepower per 1,000 bushels. The type of fan greatly affects the airflow provided per horsepower, so use a fan selection program, such as the one developed by the University of Minnesota. The moisture-holding capacity of air is reduced at lower air temperatures, Hellevang says. As average air temperatures drop below 40°F, natural-air drying becomes inefficient and not economical. Adding heat causes the beans on the bottom of the bin to dry to a lower moisture content and would increase drying speed only slightly.Hellevang recommends cooling the soybeans to 20-30°F for winter storage and completing the natural-air drying in the spring. Start drying in the spring when outdoor temperatures are averaging about 40°F.Recommended Drying TemperaturesSoybeans can be dried in a high-temperature dryer, but the dryer temperature needs to be limited to minimize damage to the beans. Refer to the dryer manufacturer’s recommendations for maximum drying temperature.Typically, the maximum drying temperature for nonfood soybeans is about 130°F. Even at that temperature, some skins and beans will be cracked. Keep the air relative humidity above 40% to minimize cracking of food grade or seed beans. Roughly, with each 20-degree increase in drying temperature, the air relative humidity is reduced to one-half, Hellevang notes. Air at 50°F and 80% relative humidity will have a relative humidity of about 40% when heated to 70°F. He recommends monitoring the soybean seeds coming from the dryer and managing the dryer temperature based on the amount of damage occurring.Food-grade soybeans and seed beans must not have damage to the seed coat, so natural-air or low-temperature drying is the preferred drying method, Hellevang says. Seed beans should be dried at temperatures below 110°F.last_img read more

Instead, many prospective college athletescompete at the club level. These teams are not limited to high-school athletes — they offer opportunities to anyone who is looking to exercise.MaryEllen Milam, the associate director of programs at TCU, said the benefits ofplaying club sports include: Sense of community Physical and mental releases of exercise Sport participation at a competitive level beyond highschoolPositive use of free timePride in representing the UniversityPearce Kurth and teammates after a club baseball game. The two decided to join the team to get four moreyears of playing on the diamond. “Everyone just wants to play and have fun,” Foxsaid. For some students, such as Becca Curran, academics overshadow athletics. A member of the women’s club basketball team, she had the opportunity to play collegiately, but earning a degree is more important for her. “I decided to go to TCU, instead of pursuing athletics [at a Division III school], because I received a really good academic scholarship to TCU that I couldn’t pass up,” Curran said. “Overall, I decided to focus on academics rather than athletics.”Even though Curran does not represent her schoolat the NCAA level, she does get to continue to play her sport while receiving apsychology degree. On top of the academic curriculum, some studentschoose club sports at TCU because they felt the overall college experience wasmore important than pursuing their athletic career at smaller schools, Miliamsaid.Katrina Metcalf, another member of the women’s club basketball team, was offered positions on the team at Chapman University and Smith College but choose to forgo those offers to get the full college experience.“I felt that playing basketball in college wouldbe a really great experience, but I was worried I would look back on my collegeexperience and feel like I missed out on just being a regular college student,”Metcalf said. On top of coaching limitations, club teams alsostruggle with drawing fans consistently.  “Sometimesour parents that live locally will come and watch us play, but we don’t everhave students come to our games,” Fox said. Club athletes do not get the glory that comes with being a Division I athlete, but they continue to play the game they love, which is what matters most to these students. “Now that we are here, I still get to go to thecollege I wanted to go to all along, and I still get to play baseball,” Foxsaid. “Baseball has always been my favorite sport, and I didn’t want to cut itout of my life.”Club sports are not just entertaining; they also help these students develop into who they are today.“I feel like I’ve had the opportunity to get involved in so many different areas on campus at TCU that have pushed me to grow as a leader and as an individual,” Metcalf said. “I’m really thankful to be at TCU and feel like I would probably be a different person if I went to another university.”The club baseball and women’s basketball teams are currently holding practices and looking for the newest additions to their team. Officers arrested the the suspect after he fought with Sheriff’s deputies when they tried to question him.A criminal records check showed the suspect has over $80,000 worth of standing warrants, the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department said. He was located near the Gold Line Memorial Park station a short time after the freeway was reopened and is now in custody.Pasadena police officers, LASD deputies and CHP personnel close the 210 Freeway and the Metro station as the sheriff’s department’s Arson/Explosives Detail responded to investigate the report, only to find out later that the reported “device” was a harmless jacket.Ramon Montenegro, Public Information Officer for the LASD Transit Policing Division, said the department’s bomb squad has advised it was now safe to reopen the freeway.“The sheriff’s Arson/Explosive Detail (LASD’s bomb squad) has rendered it safe and the freeway has been reopened,” Montenegro said.Lt. Marc Lucio at the Transit Policing Division said the bomb squad took special care in handling the incident as they would do in all bomb threat cases.“It was a jacket, but when our explosive detection K-9 sergeant was responding to the original call, when he arrived he went and looked at the jacket, there were things that he could see in and on the jacket that caused him to call our arson and explosive detail, which is the Sheriff’s bomb squad. So that’s what prompted the closure,” Lucio said. As the bomb squad investigated the scene, other deputies looked for the man who had thrown the jacket onto the freeway to question him.“When our deputies went to the Memorial park Gold Line Station to see if they could speak to this individual, originally he was compliant, and then he began to fight with our deputies,” Lucio said. “He’s been taken into custody. There was nobody injured and a criminal records check showed he has over $80,000.00 worth of warrants. He’s obviously going to be booked on that and the obstruction, fighting with our deputies and he could face additional charges later.”Even with the freeway incident resolved, LASD officers said people should always be alert and report anything suspicious to authorities.“We’d just like to remind everybody if they see something, say something,” Montenegro said. “They can call the Sheriff’s Traffic Policing, (888) 950-SAFE (7233).”Caltrans has cancelled a Sigalert declared earlier in Pasadena because of the incident, and said all eastbound and westbound lanes have been opened as of 10 a.m.Metro has also announced train service from Lake Station of the Gold Line has been restored, although some residual delays were to be expected.center_img Get our daily Pasadena newspaper in your email box. Students at John Muir High School Stage Walkout Over Durags and Dress Code

first_img Get our daily Pasadena newspaper in your email box. Free.Get all the latest Pasadena news, more than 10 fresh stories daily, 7 days a week at 7 a.m. Make a comment [Updated]   Students at John Muir High School staged a walkout at 9:27 a.m. on Wednesday to protest a district-wide ban on wearing headscarves, known as “durags,” in school.Organized by the JMHS Black Student Union, the walkout at the school was planned as a show of unity in response to a failed attempt to achieve “middle ground” on the ban, upheld by the Pasadena Unified School District.“It’s like Muslim people wearing scarves, durags have a cultural significance for black men,” said Reggie Myles, a college-bound senior at JMHS, who participated in the walkout. “In the now, you have people embracing their culture within their natural hair. In the past men used to perm their hair and now you have black men wearing short hair with waves.”The walkout stemmed from the students’ desire to wear durags in school. Head coverings are not allowed to be worn in school as per the district-wide dress code that bans the use of hats and head coverings. In addition, the display of certain clothing styles and certain colors could represent gang affiliation and the district, like all school districts, has a duty to protect its students.“While these are important conversations, the best place for students to discuss concerns is in school, with teachers and staff,” said Principal Lawton Gray. “We are providing classroom and campus dialogue to provide secure forums where all opinions are respected in both words and actions.“Currently, our school dress code does not allow for durags for head coverings. Our dress code is developed in cooperation with with teachers, students and parents/guardians and are consistent with the law, Board policy, and the values of the John Muir community.”The walkout was peaceful and the students returned to class within the hour. During the staged walkout the students chanted “I am not dangerous,” according to witnesses. Many had their hands in the air, but it was a peaceful — and relatively short — expression of disagreement with the ban.The JMHS Black Student Union began planning the walkout following a lunch meeting last Friday with Gray over the matter. Upholding district rules, Gray told the students he believes there is no middle ground on the subject, according to the students.Historically and anecdotally, durags have come to represent gang activity. The students say that is an old stereotype and it’s time for a change. The walkout was designed to coincide with fourth period, at which time the kids would be marked absent if not in their respective classrooms. The students argue that durags, also known as “wave caps” keep the hair flat, allowing men to wear their hair in natural style when removed. And Myles said the durag has also been embraced as part of modern clothing wear.“Designers like Louis Vuitton and Gucci, they make durags as a fashion statement,” he said. “We disagree with the ‘criminalizing’ of black men, as black men are the ones who wear durags.”Michelle Bailey of Pasadena School Board’s third district weighed in.“The conversation has to go deeper,” Bailey said. “When I think about being at school I think about preparing for higher education. When you look at pictures of people who are successful in their business, they’re not wearing durags.”Bailey also said the conversation about durags is valid but it might have a better platform outside of school.“Because the students are tying it to culture it’s a legitimate discussion that maybe should be had at the community level. ”Gray said this subject needs further examination.“Conversations with students will be ongoing,” he said. “Our school welcomes, values and supports all students and their families and remains committed to preparing graduates who are civically engaged, resilient and productive citizens of the 21st century.“For their own safety and to follow the law, students should limit their activities to times that don’t interfere with their learning, and they should remain in class,” Gray said. The safety and well-being of students is our top priority.” First Heatwave Expected Next Week Subscribe Pasadena’s ‘626 Day’ Aims to Celebrate City, Boost Local Economy Top of the News Business News HerbeautyInstall These Measures To Keep Your Household Safe From Covid19HerbeautyHerbeautyHerbeauty’First Daughters’: From Cute Little Kids To Beautiful Young WomenHerbeautyHerbeautyHerbeauty9 Of The Best Family Friendly Dog BreedsHerbeautyHerbeautyHerbeautyTiger Woods Is ‘Different Man’ 10 Years After ScandalHerbeautyHerbeautyHerbeautyThese Fashion Tips Are Making Tall Girls The Talk Of The TownHerbeautyHerbeautyHerbeautyWant To Seriously Cut On Sugar?
